The 2010s
Who gets to speak, who gets believed, and who gets to make the picture?
The decade offers more than a release-date filter. A film can organise an evening around monsters, romance or superheroes and still reveal assumptions about power, work, identity and whose account of an event matters. Revisiting those assumptions is one reason to bring these films together now.
This collection includes every catalog film dated 2010–2019, across countries and genres. Its cultural introduction focuses partly on the United States; the film list is broader. The paths below are editorial interpretations, not a claim that every filmmaker intended a response to the same events or that these films represent the decade as a whole.

#MeToo, with the dates kept straight
The movement's history begins before this decade. Tarana Burke founded “me too.” in 2006; #MeToo became globally visible through its viral expansion in 2017. The organisation's own history places survivor support and structural change at the centre of that work. Describing it only as a Hollywood scandal would miss both its origins and its wider purpose.
That chronology changes how we read the films. It Follows (2014) and 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016) precede the viral moment. They can be reconsidered through questions of information, control and belief without being retrospectively labelled products of a movement that became widely visible later. Midsommar (2019) gives those questions a different setting: attention and shared feeling can be welcoming while also serving a system of control.
The screen and the workplace also require different evidence. A prominent female character does not establish equality behind the camera. USC Annenberg's research on 1,200 popular films from 2007–2018 examines representation across a defined sample and records persistent exclusions. That research helps resist a tidy story in which increased public discussion automatically meant the problem had been solved. It does not measure this catalog or every film made in the 2010s.
Four ways through the decade
These are connected readings, not a ranking. Some linked reviews remain unfinished; their status appears in the complete list below.
| Path | Catalog starting points | Questions to carry between films |
|---|---|---|
| Power, consent and being believed | It Follows (2014), 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016), Midsommar (2019) | Who controls crucial information? When does apparent care restrict another person's choices? |
| Race, labour and unequal comfort | Black Panther (2018), Sorry to Bother You (2018), Us (2019), Parasite (2019) | Who benefits from a system, and whose work or exclusion makes that comfort possible? Keep the US and South Korean contexts distinct. |
| Technology, intimacy and looking | Her (2013), Ex Machina (2015), Cam (2018) | How do ownership, desire and mediated images alter a relationship or a sense of self? |
| Old worlds, new audiences | Prometheus (2012), Ghostbusters (2016), Avengers: Endgame (2019), The Irishman (2019) | What does a film ask viewers to remember? When does inherited familiarity support a new story, and when does it substitute for one? |
The last path deliberately puts a late-career gangster film beside franchise entries. The connection is an invitation to compare uses of audience memory, not a claim that they share an industrial model or artistic intention.
Horror made room for competing fears
This catalog has a pronounced horror emphasis. Absentia, The Babadook, The Witch, Hereditary and The Ritual offer different relations between private distress and an external threat. The David Bruckner collection follows one director across the decade and beyond; the Ari Aster collection concentrates on family pain and belonging.
That does not mean horror only became serious in the 2010s, or that every monster needs to be decoded into one social problem. A useful comparison asks what staging, performance, sound and narrative actually do with a fear. A film can be culturally revealing and still uneven; technical accomplishment and an interesting subject do not automatically settle a recommendation.
The changing place we watched
The decade also invites a discussion of distribution and access. The MPA's 2019 THEME report covers theatrical, home, digital and mobile entertainment as parts of a changing market. Those distinctions matter to a decade collection: what audiences could discover, and where, is a different question from what a film depicts.
The catalog alone cannot tell us how a particular owner first watched a film, whether an algorithm promoted it, or whether its release strategy caused its artistic choices. Those claims need their own evidence. This page uses release years to organise the films and specific textual connections to begin the discussion.
All catalog films from 2010–2019
The list and readiness totals are generated from the same records as the main collection. Developed draft means an editorial manuscript exists, with verdict and advisory approval tracked on its page. Coming soon! means the review still needs work. Inclusion here is not an endorsement, and an empty advisory list on a stub is not a content assessment.
Catalog years are retained, including existing festival/release-year choices. The list is complete for this catalog, not an exhaustive account of world cinema in the decade.
