Certified Corny!
Certified Corny!
Personal picks from Corny Movies Online. The cob means the site's owner has explicitly chosen to champion this film. It might be beautifully made, gloriously ridiculous, unusually unsettling, or memorable for a performance that refuses to leave your head.
What earns the cob?
The essential criterion is an explicit selection by the owner. Appearing in the catalog, being popular or receiving a strong generated review doesn't award the badge.
The selection is personal and explained through the review: what makes the film distinctive, what works, what stays with us and what qualifications matter. It can recognise accomplished filmmaking or the particular pleasure of something excessive. A film doesn't need to be cheesy to qualify.
The badge is recorded separately from the recommendation and viewer advisories. A Certified Corny film may still have a qualified verdict or substantial content caveats. The review explains the experience before you decide whether it is your kind of evening.
How scoring works
Corny DNA is a six-part profile, scored from 0 to 10 when assessed. It describes different qualities rather than producing one overall quality rating.
| Axis | What it describes | What a higher score means |
|---|---|---|
| Campiness | Theatrical excess, exaggerated performance and the pleasure of heightened style. | A stronger camp sensibility. |
| Weirdness | Unusual ideas, images, structures or experiences. | More sustained or striking strangeness. |
| Cheesiness | Cornball dialogue, broad gestures and effects or emotions that can feel conspicuously artificial. | A stronger cheesy flavour, whether enjoyable or awkward. |
| Rewatchability | The desire to return, including detail, performance and pleasures that survive knowing the outcome. | A stronger reason to watch again. |
| Cult appeal | The potential for a devoted audience and lasting attachment around a film's distinctive qualities. | Stronger appeal to a committed following. |
| So bad it's good | Enjoyment specifically arising from a film's shortcomings. | More of the pleasure comes from the ways it fails. |
Zero means little or none of that quality in an assessed profile; ten means it is exceptionally strong. Unscored means no number has been assigned. It does not mean zero.
There is no combined score or automatic pass mark for certification. Adding campiness to rewatchability would mix different judgments, and excellent films can have very low “so bad it's good” scores. The owner approves the badge; the six axes help describe the experience.
The current certified selections have unassigned numerical profiles. They keep their badges because the owner's selection is already explicit. We won't invent scores to make a completed-looking table.
The recommendation still matters
Under the v4.2 methodology, recommendations are separate judgments:
- Highly recommended: an explicit owner endorsement, recorded within Worth watching.
- Recommended with caveats: a positive but qualified owner verdict.
- Worth watching, Watch with caveats, For the curious, Hard to recommend: the standard editorial classifications. A “proposed” label means the owner hasn't approved that classification yet.
Certification doesn't remove advisories about coercion, sexual violence, racism, child harm or other significant material. Neither a badge nor a high score makes those concerns disappear. Specific plot details remain behind the review's spoiler disclosures.
